Vocabulary

If you have a grounding in Argentine Tango and are interested in learning some new or refining existing vocabulary, the Vocabulary Section of Tango Dojo might be for you.

Every month I cover various elements of Argentine Tango. For these elements, I explain the bio-mechanical underpinnings, various distinctions which need to be made in the lead and follow, and expand the principles of the elements into a matrix so that the element can be practiced in a variety of ways. For example, when we talk about sacadas, after the principles are explained, a matrix of eighteen possible sacadas will be given. I also make an effort to lead and follow with everyone and give group as well as individual feedback.

Now there are a lot of elements in Argentine Tango. According to Gustavo Navaira, there are at least thirty-five. Given my experience, I am only comfortable teaching twenty-nine elements. These elements incude Weight Changes, Projections, Side Steps, Forward Steps, Back Steps, Walking, Rock Steps, Amages, Pivots, Molinete, Ochos, Ocho Cortado, Sacadas, Planeos, Shared Axis Turns, Pasadas, Paradas, Colgadas, Volgadas, Boleos, Arrastres, Baridas, Rebounds, Ganchos and Leg Wraps, Changes of Direction, Chain Turns, Enrosque, and Lapiz.

The Vocabulary Topics over the next several months include :

Month Topics
August '08 Crusada and Crusada Variations
September '08 Rock Steps, Amages, Ocho Cortado and Paradas
October '08 Molinete, Sacadas and Planeos
November '08 Moliente, Arrastre and Intro to Colgadas
December '08 Paradas, Pasadas, and Colgadas

As this class is an all-level class. I work with people where they are. If a fundamental element is hindering learning a more complicated element, then the fundamental element will also be practiced. Partners tend to change often and fifteen to thrity minutes of the hour is used for socially dancing the elements.
