My Movement Story

How have I found my way to writing a blog? I think it all boils down to movement. I'm here writing this because I am very engaged with Argentine Tango. After twenty-five years of general movement study, the dance has become my current fascination. Apart from organizing classes and events, I find myself walking alone in figure eights to obscure Argentine music at all hours of the night, discussing the merits of improvosational dancing versus pattern dancing, and tearing apart CosmoTango performace videos. I am especially inspired by Chicho and El Pulpo. I find myself stepping through their routines frame by frame, dissecting their technique, and later trying to integrate it into my repertoire. I've had limited success with the integration. No blood has been spilled, but there have been a few train wrecks.

But how did it get this far; I mean organizing festivals and listening to obscure Argentine music? Upon reflection, I have to blame the editors of the television series Kung Fu. They somehow made David Carradine look awesome. Well, look awesome to an untrained, very impressionable six year old. It was my favorite show, and I watched it every Friday. Then one July Friday evening my dad told me to go outside and play instead of watching television. He just wanted me out of the house. So I got my radio, the one that could pick up television audio broadcasts, took it to the backyard and listened to a Kung Fu rerun. I was already hooked on movement and the martial arts, but it would be seven years before I began a formal martial arts practice.
